About the War

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of a sovereign nation. Since then, widespread destruction has swept across the country, with the most relentless fighting being in eastern Ukraine. Entire communities have been devastated, millions displaced, and countless lives lost as Ukraine continues to defend its land and people.

For Ukrainians, bombing and targeted attacks have become a daily reality. Homes, schools, hospitals, and entire towns have been reduced to rubble. Power outages occur frequently as energy infrastructure is repeatedly struck, leaving families without heat, water, or communication. Many men have been killed, injured, or forced to flee, wiping out an entire generation in it’s wake. In occupied areas, civilians face forced deportation, detention camps, and physical abuse creating deep, lasting trauma and fear.

Current needs and greatest struggles:

Throughout Ukraine, power plants are being strategically targeted right now. The entire country is facing mass power outages. This can mean that the electricity comes on for several hours a day, or can mean days in a row without any. For many, this also means extended periods without heat, as generators are expensive and hard to come by. Low temperatures continue to fall into the single digits.
